Any excuse to talk about a promising upcoming horror game is a great one, and the release of Parasite Mutant’s demo presented a perfect opportunity. For the unfamiliar, Parasite Mutant is a survival horror RPG that borrows a lot of its identity from the Parasite Eve series. And when I mean a lot, I mean a lot. So right off the jump, Parasite Mutant really needed to prove in its demo that there is actual substance to the experience. Unfortunately, the demo isn’t very convincing. In fact, it’s actually a bit of an excitement-killer.
If Parasite Mutant excels at anything, it’s definitely in how it sells its atmosphere. Everything about how you’re meant to perceive the game just feels right. In other words, the presentation in Parasite Mutant is stellar, and that begins with the visuals. The grittiness really comes out strong, and the vague sci-fi feel is a nice complement. Parasite Mutant effortlessly nails the environments, as well.
What’s a little more surprising is how good the music in Parasite Mutant is. Not only does it help reinforce the vibe that the game is going for, but there are some tracks that are genuinely phenomenal to listen to. The soundtrack could very well end up being Parasite Mutant’s biggest attraction. No matter how good the final game turns out to be, it won’t have any trouble being a memorable experience.
At least on the surface level, Parasite Mutant does everything it needs to win over Parasite Eve fans. The game looks the part and sounds the part, which is usually enough to bring in a dedicated audience. While Parasite Mutant might still find that niche audience, the game just doesn’t do much with its good presentation. It fundamentally does not understand Parasite Eve’s appeal at a deeper level.
Parasite Mutant’s ATC (Active Time Chains) combat system is nothing to write home about. It’s relatively unique for an RPG, but it just doesn’t make for a very fun time — at least, not in Parasite Mutant. The system doesn’t lend itself to a good action flow, resulting in every battle feeling pretty awkward. There’s just too much dead time where absolutely nothing is happening. Attacks in Parasite Mutant also don’t have much weight to them, so, overall, the gameplay offers a fundamentally hollow experience.
Feeling rather empty is one thing, but feeling outright unpolished is another. I hate to say this, but the game’s UI is incredibly poor. It feels super out of place for a game that punches above its weight in basically every other visual area. I know this barely has anything to do with the gameplay, but not being able to navigate through the equipment more easily is unacceptable. Important features in games should not feel like a chore.
Now, it’s hard to judge a game’s narrative based on its demo, but there is really nothing enticing about Parasite Mutant’s story. The way it throws you into the mix of things is partially to blame. While the atmosphere is gritty and tense, it builds up to nothing. The player is left waiting for context that never arrives. What can be pieced together from the demo isn’t exactly exciting either.
Parasite Mutant leaves little to actually look forward to. If the game isn’t fun and there isn’t an enthralling narrative pushing things forward, what’s the point in even playing Parasite Mutant? I love the ambience and the design, but that’s just not enough. The full game needs to do a lot more to validate its existence.
